I'm not one to read a book as I find it hard to find the time each day and be in the mood to read a novel but when I was at Bemm River for 2 weeks in March we met a couple of locals in the caravan park and got chatting about things, when the lady found out I was getting into prospecting she explained that she was from Cornish decent and her family were all gold prospectors of years gone by, she is also into doing family trees and has a lot to do with her local library which I found pretty interesting.
Anyway, she gave me some good info on the gold history around the Gippsland region and also recommended a couple of good books for me to get and read, "Diary of a Welsh Swagman" by William Evans and "Land, Labour, Gold" by William Howitt.
After searching ebay for weeks and keeping an eye on a couple of ads I snagged 3 books yesterday in a sale, Diary of a Welsh Swagman, Humping My Bluey by Graham McInnes and The Swiss Swagman by Theodor Muller for $7.50 plus $13 postage.
I'm stoked about getting the 3 books for the price that it was going to cost for just the Welsh Swagman elsewhere.
Now I've got plenty of reading material to keep me busy when taking a break from prospecting while camping and looking forward to reading about these adventures.
Are there any other "diary" type books along the same lines that are worth a read?
When I was researching the LaTrobe Valley gold history I found the article written from the Police Constable who kept a diary of his visits very interesting reading and I became interested in learning about history again.
