Thanks again Wal, great post and good information for new starters like me. I am pretty sure I walked away too early a couple of times yesterday but I broke my pick handle (very rocky ground and got a bit excited 😢) and lost the ability to dig deeper! I am also loosing confidence in my ability to discriminate between tones. I have a low end detector and digging everything in hot ground has proven fruitless and exhausting so far. I am now looking at ‘investing’ ( as I pitched it to the minister for finance) in an a better detector (and pick). For me this will almost be like starting over again but I’ve only been at it for a few months.

Anyway thanks again for all your insight I really appreciate it. I will head out once more while I am in the Charters Towers area before I have to move on. Fingers crossed that I will find my first nugget while I am here as I appreciate this towns rich history. Regards Doug
