hi, just starting out in detecting, did alot of research and bought maps. i went to talbot / amherst for 3 days detecting, didnt find any gold. Found alot of junk and some hot rocks. i hired a gpx 5000. started to get understand it a bit better by the second day. i was wondering about the best places to detect, i found old diggings and detected around the area. is that the way to go?, Just after some general areas (towns) to detect in and the best spots, eg gullies, tailings, etc. any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum kirkn. There's a lot of information one has to absorb if you're new to gold detecting. Reading the threads within the forum will gain you a lot of the information you will be looking for. If you let the guys know where your from it will be easier to suggest some local areas for you to try.

If you have any questions after reading through the forum just yell and I'm sure good advice will come your way. Best of luck with the new adventure,

Cheers Wal,

Gold can be found in some weird and wonderful spots in Victoria. Try all different spots gullies, hills etc. Try reading the ground depth and concentrate in areas where the soil isn't too deep. When you get board wandering around try the mullock heaps around the shafts you can usually pick up a few little bits on these. Get right up to the edge of shallow shafts and under trees where you think someone might not have swung before. Rub your coil on the ground and go really slow for best results. Talbot is a great spot as is around most of the towns in the golden triangle. Good luck and make sure you takes pics for us when you find your first one.

thanks , i will definatly upload photos,
how about the ground a bit away from the shallow old diggings. i was thinking say 25 meters, mark it out and go slow over an area.
