Hi. I'm Nick.

Recently bought acreage in Deep Lead near Stawell and looking forward to checking out the ground to see if there's anything there. It's rather sandy soil with a lot of gravelly like quartz areas with a dry creek.

Haven't bought a detector yet. Going to try and get an entry level one for around $500 - $750 like the at gold or makro racer. I don't know a lot about them though so if anyone can suggest a better option. Those two seem to be ones that I've seen a bit but they go for more than my budget.

Any recommended reading, videos or guides?

Excited to get into it all. :D

Welcome to PA NickS,
Try GeoVic as a good source of geo data. Select your location and scale, then start turning on layers to get the info you need for your area. I've done a sample below for you. Probably don't need to activate geology areas though, but I find these interesting. PS: The red dotted areas show historical workings.

wow that map is great, I've started reading the forum. Seems like dedicating a few nights of reading is a good idea there is a lot to get through. I think I have a few "White Mullock / Hilltops" on my place. I thought it was where trees were removed :/ :p

NS. White clay (pipe clay) can be a good indicator for gold. When wet, the gold sticks to it and travels in a stream with it. It could have been a stream bed. You could be on the money there buckko ;)

Got myself a Whites Goldmaster GMT. I'll test it out on the Mullock's next weekend :) Thanks for all the welcome messages.

check out google earth, in Queensland the government has QLD Globe which has pretty well everything you want to know about minerals , old mines ,abandoned mines & leases & existing ones not sure whether any other states are on it but for QLD it has it all.
