Beginner - Gold detecting

Hi all,

I am new to the gold detecting game and would like some advice if that's not to much to ask.
I just bought a new Makro Gold Racer VLF 56KHZ gold detector and would like to get started. I know its not the best detector on the market but my budget was $1000 max. I will be detecting in the Rushworth and Heathcote state forest area and have a few questions hopefully there not silly ones. I want to detect away from the mullock heaps and gold diggings as I know people will more powerful/better machines have covered these areas leaving me hardly any chance of finding anything. I have a dirt bike that will help me access places people may have not detected on before which will give me a better chance. So, my question is what do I need to look for when finding a spot to detect way from the diggings? What types of rock? Flat land hilly? Any specific clues I need to look for? Any other advice you guys have would also be helpful.

There is a PA members camp near Dunolly next weekend.

Didnt you hear the last bit of gold was found on friday so its all gone sorry mate.

Lol :lol: nah just havin a crack mate , good luck if you put a elcheapo $100 Detector over the right bit of ground and wave it over the right bit of gold it will find it. Its better than having a $11000 dollar detector and waving it over ground that has no gold.
My tip is do your research and the key in moving away from worked areas would be finding shallow soil areas you need to be seeing similar ground to what is worked .

Mate,

As above but I just found my first piece with a detector on shallow diggings during a training session on well flogged ground. It's had SDC's and 7000's over every inch of it and a few of us still found gold. There would have been at least 30 people on this training session alone.

Hey Summit1966

Welcome to the forum

To be honest your best chance of finding gold with that machine will be to scrub the coil over the mullock heaps very slowly. The heaps are not as noisy and, with the rain we have just had washing off a layer or two, your machine should go ok.

I think you will struggle with ground noise on open ground.
