Hi all.
I have been reading your forum for some time I have learn quite few things. So it is only fair to join.
I'm not exactly new to prospecting and metal detecting but did not done any for long time. I come to Australia in late sixties from what used to be Czechoslovakia. So please forgive me bad grammar. I have done lot of fishing and hunting in early seventies around Abercrombie, Turnon, Shoalhaven and Coxs rivers and when we camped near the river, I pan for gold. Did not had proper gold pan that time - I used fry pan. Found some color now and then, but gold was about $40 an ounce at that time. I did not think it was worth of effort, so I went to mine opals. Mostly in Coober Pedy but been to Lightining Ridge and Duck Creek. After couple years I went in partnership to work small copper mine on the way to Gunpowder in Qld. Price of copper went south so I left and after couple years working and meeting my wife we purchased 30' yacht. We sailed for couple years up and down NSW and Queensland coast, fishing, diving and hunting along the way. Eventually we run out of money so we sold the boat and worked on Barrier Reef resort island for another couple or so years. Returned to Sydney bought the house and that I was the end of fun and adventure. Now on wrong side of sixties, retired, I'm looking up to bit of fun and adventure again. Last year I got seriously ill and realized that sooner or later I will kick the bucket. When I got better I dusted of old Tandy detector and searched backyard of our rented house.
Found few coins
And lots of junk. But it was interesting, so I splashed out and bought myself XTERRA 305. I should mention that now days money is tight as I am second time married with two young kids. Anyhow, 305 payed for itself in two months and I got secondhand 705. Before this Christmas I went to my sister's property detecting for gold. Her farm is not in recognised gold producing country, but I got gut feeling that there is some. Did not find any, just heaps of projectiles of various calibers and spent brass. Some of it probably from my shooting some twenty years ago.I am building recirculating sluice and will have another go soon.
We'll, that is me. Not much to show for 45 odd years here. But if I had my life over again I would do same.
I done it my way
Regards to you all

Hi Karl and welcome to the forum. It sounds like you had a very interesting life full of adventure. Which part of Czechoslovakia are you from? I grew up in Prague but I was born after you left for Australia. Good luck with your search for the yellow stuff. :)

Welcome to the forum Karl. How ingenious when you can catch a trout in the morning, fry it in your fry pan for breakfast, and then go panning for gold with the fry pan in the afternoon. ...those were the days.

Very fulfilling life you have experienced, and sounds like you could share some truly amazing stories and adventures. They say the wrong side of 60s is the right side of 70's, and if anything is going to bring out the youth within, it's this prospecting game and the wonderful folk who are involved.

Look forward to hearing about some of the past adventures, and hopefully many on the new lease of life.

All the very best of luck with it mate,

Cheers Wal.
