Hi,

I am from South Australia, just near the Victorian border, approx 3 1/2 hrs drive from the Ballarat area, so not too far to travel.

I joined this forum to gather info and just learn a bit more about how to go about gold detecting.

I don't own a detector as yet, not sure which detector to buy, but have been looking at the Minelab GPX 5000, I would appreciate any info or other peoples

opinions on other brands of detectors.

We plan to do a bit of traveling around Australia, so I thought Gold prospecting would be a great hobby

so I am very keen to get out there and have a go.

Hi Steve and welcome to the forum. You will certainly learn heaps here and people are always willing to give good advice.
Prospecting is a great hobby and a good way to see Australia. You could review the section in the forum that discusses Detectors and that may help with making a decission on what type to get. Perhaps travel to Bendigo to one or two of the outlets there and get advise.

welcome to the forum. Put the weekend of the May 2nd, 3rd and 4th in your diary as the Murraylands Gem & Mineral Club are holding the Rockarama 2014 "Crystal and Craft Fair" and the SA Metal detecting championships will be held at Collier Park, Palmer, South Australia on the Sunday.

You can camp-out on the Palmer Oval and there are lots of traders and tailgaters both gemmies and detectors. You are guaranteed to have a great time and also to get a bargain.

The prizes for the metal detecting championship are fantastic - in past years detectors have been up for grabs on presentation of a token or medallion found in the prospecting site.
