Last night was the best coin I've found in the couple of months since I've been doing this, a 1934 shilling! Pity about the scratch, at least it wasn't me that did it. Pity also about whoever thought it would be a good idea to dig messy plugs during summer, and on top of that left the trash in the holes afterwards.

Removes value, adds character and makes your collection more traceable if it ever gets stolen(unique markings).
Took my mate to a new spot the other day and he bagged 5 silvers and I got none at that spot(his turn to win), he got two shillings 1920 and 1922 and two sixpences and a threepence(newer ones). What did you clean that little beauty up with mfdes, as it looks like your cleaning solution could be a bit strong(maybe ?)

Hi silver, it came from an area that gets a fair bit of salt, so the coin was very crusty, and I think the corrosion had happened while in the ground. Some of the pennies I found the same day were undefined green misshapen blobs with no surface detail left. Still learning, though, so happy to hear about good methods.

I used a toothbrush and soapy warm water first, followed by a 10 minute soak in ammonia, then rinsed and rubbed gently with a bit of bicarb. The same as I did on the ones below, except they needed less mechanical scrubbing with the toothbrush as they were much cleaner.

Funny, I found my first shilling on Thursday night, and then yesterday I went to an old football ground and found these three within a few square meters, near the club house:

Mfdes what your doing looks to be working great for you. Old soft drink stall perhaps ?

Something like that I reckon. I'm going to be checking a lot more rural ovals from now on...

Anyway if I got a valuable coin I probably wouldn't do more than a gentle brush with nylon toothbrush after soaking for a bit in distilled water. Depends whether I was thinking of selling it at some point.

I've still got coins from years ago that are just waiting for my skill levels to come up to task for the job, I'd rather wait twenty five years than wreck one of them(just practice on the mangy stuff). You just don't know the full account of the great melt down to decimal currency. the stuff that we read and take for granted about currency numbers may just turn out to be hogwash(then the ground finds will show their worth).
