It makes front page news if an Australian goes down in battle these days. It seems even war is safer than it used to be.

I don't know if I have been under a rock, but I watched a doco on Foxtel last night about the Sam's !!!
Now I didn't know but the yanks fought in WW1 in huge number and were called Sam's.
The doco went on to say that Wilson the president instituted large loans to the allies which started the world dominance and reliance on the yanks hence.
I suppose that's where Uncle Sam comes from Der.

The US declaired war April 6th 1917 but never sent troops to Europe until Almost a year later in march of 1918 so effectively they were only in the fighting in France for about 6-8 months..

Yeah and the Pommies got to go home on leave as did the french but the poor bloody anzacs just got shunted from one front to the next, each one many orders of magnitude worse than the last. No wonder they had little respect for there english staff commanders.

I think the next major war will be fought largely by swarms of tiny but lethal drones. Very effective in urban environments, nowhere to hide.

The Fourth Army took 57,470 casualties, of which 19,240 men were killed, the French Sixth Army had 1,590 casualties and the German 2nd Army had 10,00012,000 losses.[27]
Day one alone. :brokenh:

Some theories think push the argument that by this stage in the campaign the allied leadership had made up its mind that it would beat Germany by fighting a war of attrition which would cost millionsthe more lives but ultimately end in a allied victory. Totally ruthless and hard to comprehend in 2017.

Company abounds in here mate. :Y:

Not sure what your point is. My comment was on this day in history 1st July 1916 30,000 sons were killed. Sad. No mention of colour, nationality or religion.

Nothing more, nothing less. One soul every 3 seconds for 24hrs.
