Using a dredge in Australia for recreational prospecting is illegal - information and questions

I agree Twapster. The original post is a cool looking tool & I've seen them in the field. Don't mind a bit of grey area... gives some leeway. Unfortunately that could go either way :/ I'll happily continue to use my yabby pump to find small fishing bait in the creek & checking for them in...

Using a dredge in Australia for recreational prospecting is illegal - information and questions

I think the operator's attitude would be a big factor when questioned by authorities. I did read somewhere in the past that use of suction was not permitted (I can't spot it in any current resources though) as it was using hydraulics for the excavation. Gravity dredging uses no moving parts...

    panning equipment

A 14" or 15" Garrett pan & a snuffer bottle is a great start that will last you no matter how often or how into panning you'll get. $35 all up should see you set up with that. A basic shovel, a spoon, something to scrape crevices clean with etc. You'd be off to a good start. Cheers & good luck

Hi all, did some mods to the high banker & wanted to test it out. Also got a 5hp honda/Davey pump to supply me with the tons of water to blast clay. New (to me) spot & was happy with result & will b back for a better crack once it cools down n there's more water around. Recirculating water from...

Pumps for a Highbanker - information and questions

Here's a good start for someone... $40 start or $110 buy it now. It's got compression & spark. Clean the carb out or buy a Chinese carb & off ya go. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Honda-engine-GX160-plus-Davey-fire-pump-Parts-only-Not-working-/271726316873?pt=AU_Pumps&hash=item3f44268d49 Here's a...

Pumps for a Highbanker - information and questions

I saw Slowflow's Rato pump & was impressed. I know it was at river level but at idle or a tad above it gave more than enough water to the highbanker. Keep your eye out at the tip, scrap yard etc. for a 5hp Honda pump. There's heaps around(most farmers/property owners have them & many don't...

    My Heavy Duty Pump.

Could the pump not couple directly to the motor? Do away with that coupling & make the whole unit more compact? The pump looks very similar to my Davey Firefighter

A gizmo for us camp oven users

I like it! Think I need one now bahahaha! Edit: How many gadgets does I need? Very clever idea but a couple of bits of bark or dirt in ya camp food isn't gunna harm me. I'll stick with the regular pot lifting hook & rest the lid on some rocks etc. We'll see these at all them camping shows now...

    Newbie from Gippsland

Re: your photo. Looks a nice spot. Yeah, below that bar should be good. If you find good colour there I'd have a go at moving that huge boulder if it's seperate from the bedrock & clean out under n around it. Crowbar, bottle jack, turfor winch?

    Newbie from Gippsland

Hi there Tricky. You're looking in the right spots n doing the right things. Time, practice n patience. It's not real good gold detecting ground here. Nuggets have been found according to old documents though. Panning/sluicing will get you more consistent colour but (little as it may be...)...

    Sluicing v Detecting

I like the wet prospecting(sluice, HB, panning) side of things. Much cheaper to get set up & not too difficult to get results. Mainly because it's more social for me. No headphones & concentrating on sounds etc. Several of my friends have tried detecting & yes, you can get some cool gold & some...

    Pump intake

I'm sure you checked & double checked everything, but it's gotto be something simple. Suction hose/joiners sucking in air causing pump to cavitate? A bigger pump does have some advantages like you said... I've just gone to a 1.5" 5hp Honda/Davey firefighter pump - heaps of flow/pressure at...

    Pump intake

Open up the pump & give it a good clean. Make sure when you seal it up well so you're not sucking air or leak water. There's very little to go wrong with impeller pumps & they're not complicated. Could be corrosion or a blockage?
