    How Emergency Services View Prospectors

I prefer to just keep the car in sight. That way I not only don't get lost but also don't have the car fiddled with.

    Brass Mystery Object

Looks like a finial of some sort. Like Dave's Office said, perhaps a curtain rod end.

    Gold & Ghosts lost patch?

I overlayed that old map onto Google Earth and it's a little bit fuzzy in its accuracy. Some of the mountains line up but others are out of whack. The hill or mount named "Tabletop" is in the order of 70 miles from where it is on the map. 70 miles equates to about 60 nautical miles which is one...

    Old metal cap end?

The scratches on the back are interesting. They are running roughly 90 and 45 degrees and have a randomness about them. They may correspond to NSEW movements. Perhaps a wear plate on a piece of surveying equipment. I think surveying in the colonies was done by the government hence the George...

    Whinge of the day thread...

Black days in Australia are exactly that, days in our past where many people died and the countryside layed to waste.

Tracks cut into the hills Ovens Valley, Victoria

I think they predate drilling Grubstake. They appear to me to be from goldrush times.

Tracks cut into the hills Ovens Valley, Victoria

Yeah they are but they don't go up into the plantations. They just go up a few metres run parallel to the ground and then down again. Driving down the Alpine Highway from Myrtleford to Harrietville they appear every so often on either side of the valley. Sometimes hard to see.

Tracks cut into the hills Ovens Valley, Victoria

They start and end nowhere and are probably no longer than 200 metres.

Tracks cut into the hills Ovens Valley, Victoria

No, these aren't anything to do with water collection or management. These are tracks wide enough for vehicles to travel on. They are also on the bottpm of the hills. They run from the bottom of the hill, along then back down.

Tracks cut into the hills Ovens Valley, Victoria

Driving through the Ovens Valley today and noticed small tracks cut into the hill sides. They only run for maybe 50 to 200 metres and don't climb very high. They appear to be no more than 3 to 4 metres wide and start and finish nowhere. I'm guessing they are tracks put in to move traffic around...

If they're on the move away from you it's good. When they're in your shed looking at you it's bad. :D

    Whinge of the day thread...

Mrs JF and I got stuffed around big time with Telstra about 20 years ago. Ombudsman was involved and had it sorted in days, when we had been stuffed around for months. We will have nothing to do with Telstra.
