    Worth chasing ?

That's an excellent result from a half a bucket of gravel. Now you just have to work out a way of processing a larger quantity. I wouldn't get that much from most of my dirt but if I can process several tonnes then it starts to pay well.

What kind of black rock is this?

Great to know we have a new expert on board girlandherwhitewolf 🥸 Magnetite I do get my magnetite and hematite mixed up. Hematite Both are iron ore, can be polished and can look quite spectacular. Riebekerite When I mentioned Riebekerite I was talking of its texture however we're...

Riebeckite, also known a Crocidolite or blue asbestos however it has not developed into the fibrous for of asbestos.

What kind of black rock is this?

Sure it's a cool rock. Anything worth taking home is a cool rock, we've got a yard full of them but I think the coin might be worth more to some people. My guess it's a piece of Magnetite that's very well water worn. Have you seen that ironstone jewellery? On the other hand the texture looks...

How good are our fancy new metal detectors?

Good to sit down for morning tea with a good video. This just shows how easy it is to pay for a new bit of gear as long as you are confident you are onto a patch.

    Internet coverage out bush

The Starlink Mini has some advantages. The Mini uses a lot less power to run and the modem is internal. It's just the dish and cable and I don't notice its power consumption even when used for hours at a time.

The Riddle of the Missing Gold

Sorry I got off the subject there. One of the reasons we can't trust getting the returns that first indicators show should be there is that there may have been several others attempting to clean that spot out over the last hundred years. Your prospecting skills may be guiding you to the correct...

The Riddle of the Missing Gold

Any hobby that covers your cost is an unusual one. At least with gold we have a very good chance of doing so. I turned a few wooden bowls on the lathe out of beautiful wood They came out very nice after a days work but they sell for $80 each, hardly career making but fun to give it a go...

    Kilkivan, Near Gympie (Qld) Queensland

I don't know much about the rules in Queensland but my Dad used to tell us you could legally go up a creek as long as you stayed in the creek because they are crown land however you need to ask the right people (Mines Dept) to be sure you know the law. That rule doesn't apply here in the west...

Help please - GPX6000 screeching problem

I thought we'd got through the R&D stage. I was involved in the early testing and it only cost me $8000 but in the end I got a new machine that appears to be very good. Their warranty is very good but if the product they produced was good then we wouldn't all have to call on it 🥵

Has anyone ever go in or prospected in abandoned mines?

We entered these mines to see what type of rock they were mining a hundred years ago. We were on a live lease where we were not allowed to prospect or remove anything however there are no rules preventing us taking a look. This particular mine is in the east Pilbara in Western Australia. I have...

Help please - GPX6000 screeching problem

Just be sure you're not near some sort of interference like a solar panel or power lines and have your mobile off or on airport. The 6000 is very sensitive to EMI. but history states that it is very likely a problem within the detector.

The Riddle of the Missing Gold

Volume is everything. I have a lease very close to town so I went over there with the little Keens puffer (12V powered dryblower) and worked a grid pattern over a large area. At each spot I put about a bucket of dirt through before emptying the cons into a sample bag marked with the coordinates...

Has anyone ever go in or prospected in abandoned mines?

This was worth a careful look inside - note the rocks that had fallen. They had left these huge expanses of unsupported roof and in this case it had crashed to the ground. I had to strap Merv's wrists together to prevent him chipping away at this gold rich seam above o_O

Has anyone ever go in or prospected in abandoned mines?

We've been n a few but you have to be choosy. I stepped into the sloping mouth of one that was solid rock into a wide quartz seam. The GPX6000 picked up a signal in the quartz so with a little help of a couple of borrowed chisels and a block hammer we extracted a block of quartz with visible...

    Hi from a relative newbie.

Pip, Unfortunately reading the ground is not quite as simple as it used to be. The majority of potentially gold producing areas have been well worked so some of the less obvious areas may very well be more productive. Even when we find a little patch the natural progression might be to follow...

    Detector Compatible Distance

Yes some people have no respect and obviously don't have the brains to seek out their own area to detect. A couple of years back I went out to a 185ha patch of vacant crown land. I found one little nugget then quickly moved on a hundred metres or so and found another. As I was carefully covering...

    Detector Compatible Distance

The SDC2300 is quite happy working beside the GPX4500 or GPX6000. I think it might vary a little but we can certainly get down to 5m apart.
