I would counsel patience, saving the pennies and still buying a PI. You might be delaying your foray into nugget finding by another year but after the second year you would be well ahead vs another VLF and well set up for continuing the hobby.

Spend your combined $3k budget on a new Algoforce E1500 or 2ndhand SDC/GPX and take turns carrying the pick. Infinitely better end result than buying 2 x $1500 VLF detectors. You will be able to detect effectively in far more places and I would expect you would find 20x amount of gold.

The 6k has good ground handling, good depth, insane sensitivity to tiny bits and is light. All those could be improved slightly but can they be improved significantly enough for me to want to pay for a new detector? I dont think so. Unless my 6k is auto programmed to self destruct at 3years...
