I am also wanting to buy a metal detector for first time for my 10 yr old son. He wants to find old coins and relics.
My budget is also under 500. I can only find 1 shop in sydney area called minelab they suggested the go find 40 etc. My son likes the garrett i 200 from seeing you tube videos...
