One thing to note is that those who've been there say the country up that way is rugged and difficult to access, making it extremely dangerous for bushfires. You're planning to go there mid-summer, which is the high risk time, especially since temperature and fire forecasts for the coming summer are pretty bad. It's likely that access roads will be closed, which may well save your life.
 
Apart from trying to determine what you could find, think about how.
A good panning kit including a small shovel and crevicing tool would be a good start.
If you have access to some clayey or gravelly soils near where you live, also maybe do a bit of panning practice on those materials before heading on your holiday.
