Best coil for Equinox 900

Good Evening All .
I'm detecting in WA Kalgoorlie way, and using a Equinox 900. The standard 11Inch and 6 Inch coil. I would like to know what other coil is suitable and better for the 900 that will give me more depth as the standard; coils are killing me with fake and very small targets. I know of the Pro - Find 35 and EQX15 but would like to know if there is any other coild that will give better results.

I don't think the coils are the problem, Dennis - it's the detector. If you want more depth in mineralised goldfields soil, you need to use a pulse induction (PI) detector, that's why they dominate the nugget-hunting market.

The 900 is a multi-frequency VLF detector, which is a sophisticated kind of coin and treasure machine with very effective discrimination, that works well in less-mineralised soils. It isn't primarily a nugget-hunting detector, although people have used it for gold with some success, mostly employing the little 6 inch coil on and around shallow workings, I believe.

Unfortunately, modern gold-hunting detectors are increasingly designed for small nugget capability, as that's mostly what's still out there to find. As a result, today's prospectors spend a lot of their time digging very small targets, which the high gold price makes worthwhile.

Out of interest Dennis have you found some small pieces with your 900?

I've got a Vanquish 540 and hunt coins but I wondered if the VLF machines do sometimes find some nuggets.

Have you had a chance to do any side-by-side comparos with PI detectors in the field? If not, I'd suggest you consider an outing with one or other of the people who do tourist prospecting trips from Kal, so you can see what you are up against with the capabilities of the 900 vs the SDC2300, the GPX5000/GPX6000, or even the Gold Monster 1000 (a gold-specialised VLF).

I think you really need to establish a benchmark for the 900, so that you can be confident you're not just wasting your time. Three weeks in the goldfields finding nothing must be totally frustrating, but without something to compare with, you're in the dark as to whether it's the coil/s, the machine, your own technique, the areas you're detecting, or a combination of all of these factors that is leading to your lack of success.

There's gotta be light at the end of the tunnel for you eventually, Dennis. Good luck and please keep us posted on how you get on.
